Maui Peace Award Program 2024 Winners!
We recognize Gylian Solay M.S., has spent a lifetime in pursuit of peace, both for herself and for those around her. From her early years, where she mediated family tensions, to her work in disadvantaged communities as a teacher and advocate, she has consistently sought to create spaces of healing and understanding. Gylian’s journey took her from classrooms in crime-ridden areas to Europe, through yoga studios, and into the world of counseling, always with a focus on fostering peace, resilience, and connection. Her efforts with survivors of domestic violence stand as a testament to her enduring commitment to empowering others.
Let’s celebrate Nicole Huguenin. Nicole has shown immense strength and selflessness, especially in the aftermath of the August 8th wildfires. She led Maui Rapid Response, providing immediate aid to those affected. Not only that, but she continues to open her own home to house our beloved kupuna and others in need. Nicole has tirelessly fundraised for those struggling to afford even the most basic necessities, truly demonstrating her deep love for this community. As a fellow member of the Ka Ipu Kukui cohort, I have witnessed firsthand her unwavering dedication to bringing peace and compassion to all.
We recognize Paul Deslauriers, a courageous advocate for truth in the face of immense global challenges. Paul’s work is a testament to his unwavering commitment to justice and honesty, no matter how difficult the path may be. His perseverance and dedication are an inspiration to us all. Paul Deslauriers became a full time activist in 2002 and coordinated 283 grassroots groups throughout the US and Europe to stop the endless war on terror.
He later founded Community ReStart a non-profit organization in Western Massachusetts that ran a day center for the homeless and unemployed, housing for recovering addicts, six community gardens, and an overnight cot shelter. In 2017 he became a Maui resident and started the Maui Pono Network with local activists identifying and campaigning for candidates who support the people and environment instead of big money interests. He was a recent Maui Charter Commissioner helping to rewire our system of government to serve our community, environment and cultur He is also the director of the Maui Community Investigation that is conducting an in-depth inquiry into the Lahaina Fire.
We honor Carol Van Horn, whose joyful spirit and cheerful smile are well known throughout the island. Carol is a constant presence at events supporting our local artists, nonprofits, and keiki, and she’s always ready to lend a helping hand. During the holidays, she spreads even more joy, dressing as an elf alongside her husband, who plays Santa, bringing magic and laughter to children across Maui. Her generosity and kindness light up every space she enters. Carol could not be here in person but we recognize her today.
